The Oyo State Government has announced that the Ladoke Akintola International Airport in Ibadan is set to commence international flight operations by June 2026, following significant upgrades aimed at transforming the facility into a modern aviation hub.
Commissioner for Information and Civic Orientation, Prince Dotun Oyelade, stated that the airport’s runway is being extended from 2,400 meters to 3,000 meters and widened from 45 meters to 60 meters to accommodate wide-body aircraft. Additionally, the airfield lighting system has been upgraded to CAT C standards, and firefighting capabilities have been enhanced to meet international safety requirements.

The construction of a new international terminal is currently at 15% completion, with expectations to be fully operational by June 2026. Facilities for Customs, Immigration, and other essential agencies are also being installed to facilitate seamless international travel.
Local flight operations are anticipated to resume by the end of 2025, pending regulatory approvals. The runway, apron, taxiway, and blast pads are reportedly 55% complete, preparing the airport for the imminent restart of domestic flights.
Governor Seyi Makinde has reiterated the state’s commitment to modernizing the airport, emphasizing that the upgrades will enhance domestic connectivity and pave the way for global travel. He also confirmed that the 2026 Hajj flight to Saudi Arabia will depart from the upgraded airport.
The airport upgrade project was officially launched in September 2024, with a temporary closure in March 2025 to expedite construction efforts. The state government has also approved the dualization of the Ibadan Airport road and other link roads to improve accessibility to the airport.
These developments align with the government’s vision to transform the Ibadan Airport into a modern and internationally competitive facility, boosting economic growth and connectivity in the region.
