Wellbeing Foundation Africa Welcomes Announcement of Global Disability Summit

The Founder-President of the Wellbeing Foundation Africa (WBFA), Her Excellency Mrs Toyin Ojora Saraki, has welcomed the announcement of the UK’s first global disability summit, which will take place in July next year.

Plans for the summit were unveiled yesterday at Microsoft’s London headquarters by the new International Development Secretary, Rt Hon Penny Mordaunt MP, during a keynote address attended by representatives of the WBFA. The summit will be co-hosted with the International Disability Alliance, a global coalition of disabled rights groups.

The Development Secretary commented: “I am bringing technology companies, governments and charities together at the UK government’s first ever global disability summit in London in July 2018, to show our commitment to transforming the lives of people living with disabilities.”

Her Excellency Mrs Toyin Ojora Saraki responded to the news by highlighting the need for more to be done to help people with disabilities in the world’s poorest countries: “The announcement of a global disability summit in London next year is to be welcomed, as much more needs to be done to help people with disabilities across Africa and around the world to access education and employment.”

“One in eight of the world’s population lives with a disability, and far too many face discrimination or are simply unable to access essential services.”

“The Wellbeing Foundation Africa will continue to help those with disabilities, in particular expectant mothers and children, to tackle the barriers that endanger them or prevent them from fulfilling their potential. The summit in London next year will be an opportunity to examine how we can all be more effective in that work by fostering new partnerships and harnessing the latest technology.”
