The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has launched a scathing attack on former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi and other prominent figures in the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general election.
Speaking during a media parley in Abuja, Wike accused Amaechi of plunging Nigeria into debt through Chinese loans secured during his tenure as Transport Minister.
“When you were in power, Nigerians were happy, but the moment you were no longer in power, Nigerians are no longer happy,” Wike remarked sarcastically. “You took Chinese loans and left the country indebted — Nigerians are not happy with you.”
The FCT Minister did not spare former Aviation Minister Hadi Sirika, challenging him to explain the fate of the now-defunct national carrier, Air Nigeria.
“I saw Sirika. What happened to Air Nigeria? Nigerians were happy then? When they went to the APC in 2013 and took over power, Nigerians were happy — but no longer happy today?” he asked. “Was it under Tinubu’s government that banditry came? What is he doing now is to solve the problems they created.”
Wike also criticised former Attorney-General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, and former Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal, questioning their contributions while in office.
“I read what Malami wrote. It was so shameful. He was AGF — what did he do to resolve security challenges? Tambuwal was Speaker for four years and governor for eight years — what did he do to make Nigerians not angry? What kind of politics are we playing?” he queried.
Turning his sights on former Sports Minister and interim spokesman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Bolaji Abdullahi, Wike claimed Abdullahi only joined the coalition after falling out with his political mentor, Senator Bukola Saraki.
Despite his broadside, Wike said the only political party capable of mounting a credible challenge to President Bola Tinubu in 2027 is the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) — provided it can resolve its internal divisions.
“The only party that can challenge Tinubu is the PDP — if we put our house in order,” he concluded.
