Jurgen Klopp has been chasing his No1 target for some time but the two clubs have struggled to come to an agreement over a fee.
However, it appears Roma have now given ex-Chelsea winger Salah the green light to complete his return to the Premier League.
But, there may be repercussions for the Blues and United as they hunt Salah’s team-mate Nainggolan.
Express Sport understands Nainggolan is a key summer target for Jose Mourinho, who is among those being prioritised ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo.
Meanwhile, Chelsea have long been linked with the Belgium international.
According to Italian outlet CalcioMercato, United, Chelsea and Inter Milan are anxiously waiting to see if Salah’s switch leaves Nainggolan’s future in the balance.
It is said Roma need to make a sale by the end of June of around £26million to ensure they abide by FIFA’s financial fair play rules.
With Salah set to be sacrificed by the Serie A club in a deal worth close to £40m with add-ons, he would cover the needed finances.
Roma are listening to offers for some star players still though, including Kostas Manolas and Nainggolan.
But CalcioMercato add offers would have to be very high to grab the Italians’ attention, with at least £44m wanted for Nainggolan.
However, even if United or Chelsea match their valuation, Roma could still refuse to accept with Salah going.
Alternatives targets in midfield for United would be Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic and Tottenham’s Eric Dier, while the Blues are closing on Monaco’s Tiemoue Bakayoko.
