Popular Nigerian author and academic, Professor Wole Soyinka was in South Africa recently to deliver a lecture on the influence of world icon Nelson Mandela.
The lecture titled “Long walk to Mandeland” will explore the legacy of Nelson Mandela and what it means for South Africa and Africa in general.
Professor Soyinka also just accepted the Distinguished Visiting Professorship in Literature at the University of Johannesburg.
His lecture was one in a series of engagements he will be presenting in the decolonisation project initiative by UJ.
Last year, Professor Soyinka took a political principle stance that he would leave the United States where he has pursued an academic career across Universities for the past four decades, in an ironic reverse-journey of his politically informed departure from Nigeria in the 1970s.
The respected Nigerian author and academic promised to leave the USA should Donald Trump win the country’s presidency. Following Trump becoming the American president, Professor Soyinka has made true his promise. He cut up his green card (which allows individual residency in the US) and returns to Africa, specifically his home town of Lagos.
