Jose Mourinho has admitted he may not get the players he wants in this transfer window as he looks to close the gap with Manchester City.
Asked directly at Levi’s Stadium whether there will be more signings, Mourinho told a news conference: “One thing is what I want and another thing is what is going to happen.”
Anthony Martial’s future is also up in the air after his agent, Philippe Lamboley, said in June the Frenchman wants to leave.
Mourinho, however, suggested it would not be the 22-year-old’s decision.
“I would like to be in Los Angeles now and I am in San Jose, you cannot do whatever you want in life,” said the Portuguese coach.
“I would love to arrive in L.A., to train in L.A. and play all my five matches in L.A., and then don’t travel, don’t change hotel and then go back to Manchester.
“I would like to play against Leicester [on the opening weekend of the Premier League season] on Sunday but I have to play on Friday, so you don’t get always in life what you want.”
United have drawn their first two matches on their tour of the United States ahead of the start of the International Champions Cup against AC Milan in L.A. on Wednesday.
One positive for Mourinho in Santa Clara was Alexis Sanchez’s performance, despite only arriving in America on Friday after visa issues had prevented him from travelling with the rest of the team.
“He was OK,” said Mourinho.
“You work individually with I’d say a personal trainer, which is not the case because he’s a member of our staff, we left one guy behind to work with him, we knew by the physical point of view he would be OK.
“Match fitness then is a different thing but we knew he could be good and was a good physical effort for him, a bit more than an hour, which was good.”
