Delta State 2015 governorship aspirant, Dr. Festus Okubor, has called for a change of attitude among politicians in the country, ahead of next year’s elections in order to. give credibility to the polls.
.
Okubor spoke in Asaba while reacting to a keynote address by the Chairman of Independent National Electoral commission, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega, at a seminar on Building Confidence in the Electoral System, for electoral stakeholders organised by Delta State Independent Electoral commission, DSIEC, in collaboration with INEC.
.
He said his call became necessary because of the negative attitude of contestants to election results, saying, “as politicians, I think this is the time for us to deliberately work to add value to electoral outcomes, no matter what. What this means is that we must stop seeing sabotage from outside.
.
When election results are declared, we must say the better person won. When we do that, the ordinary person in the village will accept the outcome, give respect to the outcome and be more liable to follow the leadership that is now in place for the good of society.”
.
He called on politicians to learn to congratulate each other, and also congratulate INEC, pointing out that the job of INEC and the Election Management Bodies, EMBs, was not easy. He noted that “politicians must learn to accept defeat.”
