The Bauchi Youth Coalition, known as BAM-V, has called on the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to urgently sanction the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for his alleged anti-party activities.
The coalition is urging the PDP leadership to consider either suspending or expelling Wike from the party to prevent further internal conflicts that could jeopardise the party’s prospects ahead of the 2027 general elections.
This call to action follows Wike’s controversial comments, where he allegedly threatened to “set on fire” states governed by PDP governors who have shown solidarity with the current Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara.
Wike’s remarks have been widely criticised within the party, with many members viewing them as a divisive move that could undermine party unity and stability.
Reacting to Wike’s statements, the BAM-V coalition expressed strong support for the PDP’s decision to summon Wike for questioning, highlighting that it is time for the party to take firm action against the former Rivers State Governor for his open defiance of party rules and his continued anti-party activities.
In a statement signed by its Director-General, Mohammed Abubakar Jibo, BAM-V emphasised that Wike’s recent conduct, including his actions during the 2023 presidential election, has damaged the PDP’s image and effectiveness.
The coalition accused Wike of working against the party’s interests, specifically citing his support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) during the election, which they claim contributed to the PDP’s defeat and the loss of its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar.
“There is no question that Nyesom Wike’s behaviour warrants immediate action from the PDP,” the statement read.
“Wike’s public threats and his history of undermining party decisions demonstrate a clear disregard for the unity and principles of the PDP.
He has repeatedly placed his personal ambitions above the collective goals of the party, which is unacceptable.”
BAM-V further defended the decision made by the PDP Governors’ Forum during a recent meeting in Jalingo, Taraba State, where the governors expressed support for Governor Siminalayi Fubara as the rightful leader of the PDP in Rivers State.
According to the coalition, this decision aligns with the party’s protocols and does not justify the hostile response from Wike.
“We, at the Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed (BAM-V), a coalition of youth organisations dedicated to democracy, good governance, and accountability, take strong exception to Wike’s threats to cause political crises in PDP-controlled states,” the statement continued.
“His reckless and indecorous behaviour is unbecoming of someone who has benefited immensely from the PDP, yet has repeatedly acted against its interests.”
The coalition accused Wike of betraying the party during the 2023 presidential elections, citing his support for the APC and its candidate, President Tinubu, as a clear case of anti-party conduct.
“There is nothing more damaging to a political party than having a high-profile member openly work against its success in a national election,” said Jibo.
In light of these concerns, BAM-V is calling on the PDP’s National Working Committee to not only ensure that Wike faces the PDP Disciplinary Committee but also to take decisive action by either suspending or expelling him from the party.
The coalition believes that without such steps, Wike’s actions could cause further harm to the PDP, particularly as the party prepares for the 2027 elections.
“The PDP must act swiftly and decisively to prevent further damage,” the statement urged. “Wike’s continued presence in the party poses a risk to its cohesion and electoral success.
By allowing him to remain without consequences, the PDP risks sending a message that anti-party activities are tolerable, which could embolden others to follow suit.”
BAM-V’s call for action reflects a broader concern within the PDP over maintaining discipline and unity as it navigates the challenges of opposition politics.
The coalition’s appeal underscores the urgency for the party to enforce its rules and uphold its values, ensuring that all members, regardless of their position, are held accountable for actions that undermine the party’s goals.
The situation continues to develop, with many within the PDP watching closely to see how the party leadership will respond to these demands.
The decision taken by the PDP in the coming days will not only impact Wike’s future in the party but could also set a precedent for how the party handles internal dissent and disloyalty as it gears up for future electoral battles.
