Abubakar Gummi, representing Gummi/Bukkuyum Federal Constituency of Zamfara State in the House of Representatives, has officially joined the All Progressives Congress (APC), departing from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on which platform he was elected.
Gummi announced his defection in a letter read by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen during Wednesday’s plenary, attributing his decision to unresolved internal crises within the PDP.
He highlighted the recent removal of the PDP chairman in his local government, leading to the emergence of two chairmen and disrupting the party’s democratic operations.

However, Minority Leader Kingsley Chinda challenged the defection, urging the Speaker to honor his oath of office by declaring Gummi’s seat vacant.
Chinda argued that the reasons cited by Gummi do not constitute a legitimate crisis, as defined by the Supreme Court, for such a defection.
“The law of the land is clear on what should happen when a member leaves the party that sponsored him for the seat he occupies,” Chinda stated, emphasizing the Speaker’s duty to act in accordance with the Constitution and his Oath of Office.
