Abuja (Women Affairs Ministry Report) – The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Zainab Maina has said that the need to work and harness the power of technology to promote inclusion and to help realize full and equal participation of Persons with Disabilities in national development will be the main focus as Nigeria joins the rest of the world to celebrate the 2014 International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Wednesday December 3, 2014.
According to the Minister, the event with the theme: “Sustainable Development – the Promise of Technology,” is aimed at highlighting available technologies to support the activities and economic production of Persons with Disabilities to ensure their optimal contribution to national growth and development.
Zainab Maina intensified that a lot of Persons with Disabilities are resourceful and are venturing into various economic empowerment programmes. She also expressed optimism that they can do a lot more if supported and encouraged, especially with the use of simple and accessible machines. The Minister enjoined stakeholders to mark the day with activities that will focus on issues related to the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities in society and development both as beneficiaries and agents of change.
“The United Nations General Assembly Resolution of 1992 instituted the third day of December in every year as the day for Persons with Disabilities. The Resolution called on member – nations and organizations to observe the day every year and intensify their efforts towards improving the situation of Persons With Disabilities,” she revealed.
