Director-General of National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Brigadier General Johnson Bamidele Olawumi, has warned corps members whose services will be engaged by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) as ad-hoc staff during the 2015 general election against accepting gratification or any financial inducement from politicians.
Giving the warning on Saturday in Kano during his visit to the orientation camp in Kusala Dam, Karaye, Karaye LGA of the state, Brig. Gen. Olawumi stated that corps members’ services will be engaged to participate in the 2015 general election in accordance with the Memorandum of Understanding between NYSC and INEC.
He, however, assured parents, whose wards would be involved not to entertain any fear, noting that the Corps is aware of fears being expressed over the forthcoming general election and that necessary measures were being put in place to forestall any ugly occurrence.
According to him; “we have an understanding with INEC which we’ll continue to honour. Therefore, corps members will continue to take part in elections. Though I am aware of fears being expressed as regards security, I want to use this opportunity to assure parents that we are working round the clock to ensure corps members are safe and secure, anytime they are called out for such service”.
His words: “you can see what we did recently in Ekiti and in Osun States, nothing harmful happened to any corps member who participated in the exercise”.
Earlier, the Kano State coordinator, Alhaji Abdulrasheed Sanusi, disclosed that a total 2371 corps members participated in this year’s orientation programme; 1,322 were mobilized for Batch B while 1,049 were Batch C members.
