Osita Chidoka, a top official in the opposition People’s Democratic Party, has criticised INEC for its performance during the country’s most recent presidential election.
Chidoka stated that INEC was at blame for not being able to instantly update election results online.
He made this comment during an appearance on Sunday Politics on Channels Television.
“INEC is a scandal of epic proportions. As a Nigerian, I am embarrassed to be linked with INEC.
To ensure that nothing unexpected happens on election day, I came on this programme to advocate for independent verification of the INEC system. INEC claimed there was a problem on election day.
Chidoka added that it was unfortunate that INEC had gone to court to argue that failure to follow regulations was not sufficient cause to call off an election.
He went on to say that the fact that INEC is having to deal with this problem makes the country seem terrible internationally, and he wondered why it didn’t learn from countries like India and Indonesia, who also have enormous populations but manage to run more credible elections.
According to the media, the PDP and the LP contested the results of the February 25 presidential election in which Bola Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was declared the victor.
They argued that because INEC did not upload updated results to the election portal in real time, Tinubu’s victory should be overturned.
The court has since ruled that INEC can disclose the results however it sees fit.
