In a significant development for Nigerians living abroad, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development, Arch. Ahmed Dangiwa, has unveiled plans for the introduction of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme in February 2024. This initiative is specifically designed for Nigerians residing in the United Kingdom, United States of America, and Canada.
The announcement came during a meeting in the minister’s office in Abuja, where he received Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, the Chairman of Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), and other members of the management staff. The proposed launch of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme in the UK, USA, and Canada aims to provide a housing solution for Nigerian expatriates in these regions.
The motivation behind this initiative is the recognition that approximately 20 million Nigerians living in the Diaspora contribute significantly to the Nigerian economy by remitting an average of over $24 billion annually. The Minister highlighted the importance of ensuring that these expatriates have access to decent housing in Nigeria, emphasizing the goal of providing a comfortable home for them.

During the meeting, the Minister, in a statement signed by Gabriel Odu from the Protocol Unit at NiDCOM, reiterated the overall objective of the Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme. He stated, “The overall goal is to ensure that as our brothers and sisters sojourn abroad, they also have a decent shelter over here in Nigeria to call their home.” This underlines the commitment to improving housing conditions for Nigerians in the Diaspora.
Arch. Dangiwa also expressed the Federal Housing Authority’s (FHA) commitment to fulfilling its tripartite mandate. This involves collaboration with NiDCOM on the Diaspora City Project, which spans over 675 hectares of land in Maitama 2, as noted in the statement. The project aims to create a conducive living environment for Nigerians returning from abroad.
Hon. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of NiDCOM, lauded the Minister for his dedication and active involvement in the launch of the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme during the Nigeria Diaspora Investment Summit. She emphasized the eagerness among Nigerians in the Diaspora for both the Diaspora Mortgage Scheme and the upcoming Diaspora Smart City in Kabusa, Maitama, FCT.
The Diaspora Mortgage Housing Scheme holds the promise of not only providing housing solutions for Nigerians abroad but also fostering economic growth through increased investments in real estate. As the launch date approaches, anticipation is building among the Diaspora community, highlighting the potential positive impact this scheme could have on the housing sector and the broader Nigerian economy.
