A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dele Momodu, has said that only a formidable candidate from Northern Nigeria can effectively challenge President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 presidential election.
Speaking during an appearance on Arise Television’s Morning Show, the former PDP presidential aspirant emphasized the strategic importance of the North in Nigeria’s electoral landscape, noting growing feelings of marginalization in the region under Tinubu’s administration.
Momodu warned that such perceived marginalization could trigger a backlash from Northern voters against the ruling government, stressing that any opposition hoping to defeat Tinubu must factor in regional power dynamics.

“I believe Tinubu can only be effectively countered by another strong candidate from the North,” Momodu said. “Any Southerner who thinks they can challenge Tinubu is likely wasting their time.
The PDP—or any coalition—must recognise that power dynamics require strategic thinking.”
He described Nigerian politics as an “optical illusion—much like magic, the more you look, the less you see,” calling for a deeper understanding of political realities.
The veteran journalist and publisher also underscored the importance of coalition building, suggesting that opposition alliances, especially involving key Northern figures like Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso, could enhance the chances of unseating the incumbent.
His comments come amid growing political chatter from the North, including a recent statement by Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser on Political Affairs to Tinubu in the Office of the Vice President, Kashim Shettima.
Baba-Ahmed said the North would soon determine its political direction and called on President Tinubu to step aside for a new generation of leaders.
