2027 polls: PDP condemns attack on party chieftain, journalists in Ebonyi

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State has condemned the alleged attack on a former All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain, Barrister Ifeanyi Nworie, his supporters and journalists during a political event in Ezza South Local Government Area of the state.

The party described the incident as an assault on democracy, freedom of association and press freedom, alleging that the attack was aimed at intimidating opposition members ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Addressing journalists, the Ebonyi PDP leadership said the disruption occurred during a gathering organised to formally receive Nworie into the party, adding that several vehicles and other property were vandalised during the incident.

The party also alleged that a number of its supporters sustained injuries, while journalists covering the event narrowly escaped harm after their vehicle was reportedly attacked by suspected political thugs.

PDP called on security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The party further urged the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other security agencies to remain neutral and provide adequate security for all political parties as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

While expressing concern over what it described as increasing political tension in the state, the PDP insisted it would not be intimidated or discouraged from carrying out its lawful political activities.

The party appealed to its members to remain peaceful and law-abiding, reaffirming its commitment to democratic principles and credible political participation ahead of the next general elections.
