Former Senator and human rights activist, Shehu Sani, has called on Northern Nigerians to rally behind President Bola Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking with journalists in Kaduna on Monday, Sani commended the progress made under the current administration, stressing that those from the region who previously held power but failed to deliver should apologise rather than criticize.
“For those of us from this part (North) of the country, we appreciate the progress made so far by this present government.

And for those of them who had the opportunity to do better and failed, we tell them it is better they apologise for the wrongs they have done to the people of the North,” he said.
Sani cautioned Northerners against being incited by disgruntled political actors seeking to undermine the current administration. He emphasized that President Tinubu had supported Northern leadership for eight years and deserved reciprocal support.
He said, “The North must not allow itself to be incited against a government that is doing far better than the one that came from their own region. They should not be incited against a President who stood by them when their own ruled the country.”
Reflecting on the nation’s past challenges, Sani underscored the need for national unity and political maturity.
“Nigeria is not just any country—it has endured horrible and terrible experiences. We must learn from the past to avoid repeating the same mistakes,” he stated.
The former lawmaker accused certain individuals of pushing personal agendas disguised as regional advocacy.
“Their grievances are not about the North, the people, insecurity, or governance. They are rooted in personal interests and feelings of exclusion from government,” Sani said.
While acknowledging the right of citizens to express their opinions, he warned that such expressions must not endanger national unity.
“Everyone has a right to speak out, but it should not be in a manner that threatens the peace and stability of the country,” he cautioned.
