Former Kano State gubernatorial candidate and political analyst, Salihu Tanko Yakasai, popularly known as Dawisu, has outlined what he described as the only three viable political options available to former Kano State Governor and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yakasai made the assertion in a Facebook post on Sunday, analyzing the likely political trajectory of the NNPP leader as fresh alignments begin to take shape across Nigeria’s political landscape.
According to Yakasai, Kwankwaso’s options include: returning to the All Progressives Congress (APC) under the leadership of his estranged political associate, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje; joining forces with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar and other opposition figures in a possible merger; or remaining in the NNPP, which he described as politically insignificant.
“Kwankwaso has only three options. One, to go back to the APC, under Ganduje as National Chairman. Two, to join forces with Atiku and other opposition figures. Or three, remain in NNPP and risk becoming politically irrelevant,” Yakasai wrote.
He warned that a return to the APC would mean subjugating himself to Ganduje, with whom he has had a long-standing and public political rivalry.
“If he returns to APC, he’ll have to bow to Ganduje, whom he once anointed but now opposes bitterly,” he added.
Yakasai further suggested that the second option—forming an alliance with Atiku and other opposition leaders—could allow Kwankwaso to retain national relevance, particularly as talks of a possible merger to challenge the APC in 2027 continue to gain traction.
On the third option, Yakasai mocked the NNPP as a “kayan gwari party”—a Hausa term implying a party of little significance—suggesting that remaining in the NNPP could relegate Kwankwaso to the political sidelines.
The remarks come amid growing speculations over the future of opposition politics in Nigeria, as key figures weigh strategic decisions ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Kwankwaso, who came fourth in the 2023 presidential election, remains a dominant figure in Northern Nigerian politics but has struggled to expand his influence nationally.
As of the time of filing this report, Senator Kwankwaso has not publicly responded to Yakasai’s comments.
