The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) says 6,050 candidates from the different political parties in the country will be contesting in today’s governorship and House of Assembly elections across 26 states in the federation.
The commission disclosed this in its daily bulletin made available to journalists in Abuja, on Friday.
Of the 6,050 contestants, 760 candidates are contesting for governorship, while 5,290 are contesting for seats in the state Houses of Assembly.
The governorship election will hold in 29 states. There will be no election in eight states: Anambra, Bayelsa, Edo, Ondo, Osun, Ekiti Kogi and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.
According to INEC, ahead of the today’s elections, it has taken measures to address challenges of late arrival of materials and workers at some polling units across the country, as well as the seeming lack of proficiency in the use of the Smart Card Readers (SCR) by some ad-hoc staff, which characterized the presidential and National Assembly elections.
