Governor Emmanuel Uduaghan of Delta State has called on leaders elected by the African people to individually and collectively pledge to discharge the peoples’ historic mission of transforming the continent into a home of democratic practices and economic advancement.
Speaking while declaring open the 66th Executive Committee Meeting of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA), African Region held in Asaba, Dr Uduaghan enjoined the parliamentarians from the African region to focus attention on the task of making the 21st century, an African century.
The Governor, who was represented by his deputy, Prof. Amos Utuama (SAN), urged the association to use the opportunity provided by the forum to address some of the nagging challenges facing legislatures in the African continent.
He said it was certain that members of the CPA shared the understanding that only through a democratic system of governance can the people have the needed space to contribute their talent and creativity to the development process.
He noted that Africa’s all round advancement and its recovery from centuries of slavery, imperialism, colonialism, apartheid and neo-colonialism, would among other things, be linked to its realization of the goals of peace, security, democracy, unity and prosperity.
The Chairperson, Executive Committee, CPA, and Speaker, Gauteng Provincial Legislative in South Africa, Hon. Lindiwe Maseko, sued for continuous mutual working relationship between the Speakers of States Houses of Assembly and Governors in Nigeria so as to contribute significantly to the growth and development of the CPA.
The Speaker, Delta State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Victor Ochei, expressed satisfaction at the hosting right given to the State by the CPA,and intimated the parliamentarians and members of the association that the State House of Assembly has been adequately positioned to meet the demands of making well focused, research and people- oriented laws that would impact positively on the people of the State.
