The Kano State Film Censorship Board has issued a directive prohibiting the screening of movies that depict or endorse cross-dressing and thuggery in the state.
This decision was announced by the Board’s executive secretary, Abba El-Mustapha, during a meeting with the management and stakeholders from Kannywood.
A statement released by the board’s spokesman, Abdullahi Sani Sulaiman, explained that the ban was imposed in response to public concerns about the potential promotion of criminal activities and inappropriate behaviors, particularly among young people.
El-Mustapha emphasized the importance of upholding the state’s customs, norms, and values, stating, “It is high time to fish out any film that may demoralize our customs, norms and values in the name of reaching popularity, viewers or business making.”
This development comes amid a clarification by the Nigeria Police Force, stating that cross-dressing is not a crime under Nigerian law.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, explained that individuals like Bobrisky, known for controversial cross-dressing, cannot be arrested solely based on their choice of clothing or lifestyle.
However, he noted that such lifestyles might not align with societal norms.
