The wife of Nigerian President, Patience Jonathan, who is the President of the African First Ladies Peace Mission (AFLPM) has described the late President of South Africa, Nelson Mandela as an icon of peace for humanity.
She stated this in an address delivered at the First Ladies’ Meeting which held in Paris during the Elysee Summit for Peace and Security in Africa on Friday December 6, 2013 with the theme: “Acts of Sexual Violence Against Women in Africa,” hosted by the First Lady of France, Valerie Trierweiler.
Patience Jonathan further indicated that the life of Nelson Mandela was an epitome of peace and compassion and reflects the principles of the African First Ladies Peace Mission. She noted that the late South African President who received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 jointly with Frederik Willem de Klerk was a great bridge for promoting peace because of his forgiving spirit and because his life respected and enhanced the freedom of others.
She added that as a proponent of peace, justice and social inclusion, Mandela was a towering iconic figure in life and an even greater figure in death.
The AFLPM President reiterated that Mandela is indeed a hero of all time who was held in the highest esteem by people not only on the African continent, but the entire world. “Nelson Mandela would be greatly missed but his impact would be felt forever. The activities of the AFLPM would continue to draw inspiration from the remarkable life of Nelson Mandela,” she averred.
Nigeria’s First Lady explained that the African First Ladies Peace Mission, which is open to all the first ladies in Africa has the mandate of conflict prevention and management as well as the making, keeping and building of peace through varied means including: civil, humanitarian and diplomatic actions.
