Five persons have been confirmed dead while 13 others sustained injuries following a high voltage power surge in the Tudun-Wadan Pantami area of Gombe metropolis, Gombe State.
The Gombe State Police Command’s Public Relations Officer (PPRO), DSP Buhari Abdullahi, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on Monday.
According to him, the power surge not only led to the loss of lives and injuries but also damaged electrical appliances and electrified metallic objects in and around affected homes.
“Upon receiving the report, officers from the Low-cost Divisional Police Headquarters swiftly mobilised to the scene to secure the area and evacuate victims to nearby hospitals for urgent medical attention,” the statement read.
Preliminary investigations, according to the police, revealed that five persons lost their lives, while 13 others sustained varying degrees of injuries.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at different health facilities within the state capital, while the remains of the deceased have been deposited at the hospital morgue.
DSP Abdullahi assured residents that a thorough investigation into the cause of the electrical surge is underway to prevent a recurrence of such a tragic incident.
