Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82 in a private clinic in London, United Kingdom.
The news of his death was announced on Sunday by his former spokesperson, Garba Shehu, via a post on social media platform X.
“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus, Amin,” Shehu wrote.

Sources close to the family revealed that Buhari had been battling an undisclosed illness and was recently discharged from an intensive care unit. He was said to have fallen ill during a routine medical visit abroad and had remained under observation in the weeks leading to his demise.
Though the exact nature of his illness was not disclosed, his condition was believed to be improving before it reportedly worsened.
Buhari, a retired Major General, was a central figure in Nigeria’s political landscape for over four decades. He first came to power as a military ruler from 1983 to 1985 following a coup, and later returned as a democratically elected president in 2015.
He served two terms in office, leaving power in 2023. His presidency was marked by an aggressive anti-corruption campaign, economic restructuring efforts, and an ongoing battle against terrorism and insecurity in various regions of the country.
Throughout his career, Buhari maintained a reputation as a disciplined, austere leader with a strong following in Nigeria’s northern region.
Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by the family in due course, while condolences and tributes have begun pouring in from political leaders, foreign dignitaries, and citizens across the country.
Buhari is survived by his wife, Aisha Buhari, and several children.
