Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha, has expressed confidence in his role, stating that he is not afraid of being removed from his position despite calls for his removal by the Edo State leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP.
The REC made this remark during a press briefing in Benin City, where he reacted to the PDP’s demands for his removal. Onuoha attributed the PDP’s actions to ignorance of the commission’s workings.
According to him, the prevailing mentality in Nigeria’s electoral system is absurd, where those who lose elections often abuse the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, while those who win praise the commission.
Onuoha emphasized that the electoral process is not solely his responsibility, questioning whether he could be present in all polling units. He also highlighted the role of the judiciary in determining the validity of elections.
The REC cited the Supreme Court’s judgment affirming the credibility of the election, urging critics to accept the outcome. Onuoha maintained that even if all electoral officers and staff were removed and redeployed, the commission’s structure would prevent electoral compromise or manipulation.
He concluded by emphasizing that his conscience is clear, and he is committed to upholding the integrity of the electoral process.
