The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised President Bola Tinubu’s push for Nigeria to secure a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council, describing the move as “absurd” while the country grapples with worsening insecurity.
In a statement signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, on Sunday, the party said it was wrong for the government to seek global responsibilities when it has failed to guarantee the safety of its own citizens.
“It is shocking that the Tinubu administration is asking for a permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council while bandits are slaughtering Nigerians and taking over parts of the country,” the statement read.

The ADC cited recent attacks in Zamfara and Katsina States, including last Friday’s assault on a mosque in Yandoto village, Zamfara, where worshippers were killed and others abducted.
The party noted that more than 140 people had been murdered in both states in the past two months alone, with Amnesty International estimating over 10,000 lives lost nationwide to armed groups since May 2025.
The statement accused the government of failing to safeguard Nigeria’s territorial integrity, pointing to reports that armed groups in Zamfara had compelled farmers to pay over N56 million before being allowed access to their farmlands.
“This is no longer just about insecurity; it is about Nigeria’s territorial integrity being eroded under President Bola Tinubu,” the ADC warned.
“What we see today is not simply a security lapse, but clear evidence, written in blood and innocent lives lost, of a government that has lost control.”
The party condemned what it described as routine condolence messages from the presidency, insisting that in “any serious country” such tragedies would have prompted resignations, emergency meetings, and a total review of strategy.
“It is therefore absurd that the same administration, under whose watch Nigerians are being killed daily and bandits are taking control of territories, now seeks to sit at the highest table of global security discussions,” the statement said.
The ADC further criticised President Tinubu for missing the commissioning of 874 new officers at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA), Kaduna, for the second consecutive year, accusing him of prioritising the reopening of the renovated National Arts Theatre in Lagos over addressing worsening insecurity.
“With such tragic indifference, this government risks creating the dangerous perception that some Nigerian lives matter less than others,” it said.
The party reiterated its call for the immediate declaration of a state of emergency in Zamfara State, stressing that urgent action was needed to end the siege and stop the bloodshed.
