The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Plateau State says it has successfully conducted party primaries in 15 of the state’s 17 local government areas ahead of the local government elections scheduled for September 9.
The state chairman of the party, Hanatu Gagara, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), noting that the exercise was largely peaceful across the affected councils.

Gagara explained that primaries were not conducted in Mikang and Langtang South local government areas because aspirants from the two councils submitted their nomination forms after the deadline for the sale of forms had expired.
“We successfully conducted our primaries in 15 local government areas, and the exercise was peaceful and orderly,” she said.
“What happened in the remaining two local governments was that the aspirants came late to obtain nomination forms. By that time, the deadline had already passed.”
She, however, noted that the situation might still be addressed following an extension granted by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC).
“Now that PLASIEC has extended the time for primaries in line with the new Electoral Act, their cases will be reviewed. I only received the letter from the commission this afternoon, so the process has not started yet,” she added.
Gagara expressed confidence in the party’s chances in the upcoming elections, describing the ADC as a strong opposition platform in the state.
According to her, the party has fielded credible candidates for both chairmanship and councillorship positions.
“We believe we have a good chance of winning the elections. The growing number of new members and defections from other political parties shows that many people believe in our platform,” she said.
The chairman further revealed that the party’s electronic membership registration exercise was ongoing across the state.
“Our members are very enthusiastic, particularly as the congresses approach. Many people are participating in the registration process, and we have deployed officials to various local governments to oversee the exercise,” she said.
She also urged existing and prospective members to validate their membership by visiting their respective ward and local government offices.
