The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio, has expressed support for the proposed creation of Anioma State.
The proposed state, a long-standing initiative in the National Assembly, is being championed by Ned Nwoko, who represents Delta North Senatorial District, with the aim of increasing the number of states in the South-East region.
Akpabio made his position known while speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) South-South Zonal Congress held in Asaba on Wednesday.

He stated that he has no objection to the creation of Anioma State, noting that the proposed capital would be located in Asaba, which is currently the capital of Delta State.
According to him, the creation of the new state would necessitate relocating the capital of Delta State to Warri.
“If that is the only demand from the South-South for state creation, then I should be proud to support it,” Akpabio said.
“For Anioma State, the capital will be in Asaba; then the capital of Delta State proper will be in Warri. That’s not a problem.
“I don’t think we should be afraid because the more states we have, the more development. Assuming it passes through the various Houses of Assembly, it means we are going to have one additional state,” he added.
He further noted that the proposed state creation would enhance development in the region and expressed optimism about its political and economic benefits.
