Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has announced his resignation from the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Obi disclosed his decision in a statement posted on his verified X handle on Sunday, citing concerns over internal instability and alleged external interference in party affairs.
The former Anambra State governor alleged that agents of the Nigerian state, whom he accused of infiltrating the Labour Party and creating crises that led to his earlier exit, were now finding their way into the ADC.

According to him, the individuals were responsible for fostering division, endless litigation, and internal conflicts within political parties, thereby distracting from governance and nation-building.
“Let me state clearly: my decision to leave the ADC is not because our highly respected Chairman, Senator David Mark, treated me badly, nor because my leader and elder brother, Atiku Abubakar, or any other respected leaders did anything personally wrong to me. I will continue to respect them,” Obi stated.
He added that the recurring pattern of political interference and internal wrangling was undermining efforts to address pressing national challenges.
Obi emphasised that his political ambition was not driven by a quest for power but by a desire to see a more just and functional society.
“I am not desperate to be President, Vice President, or Senate President. I am desperate to see a society that can console a mother whose child has been kidnapped or killed while going to school or work,” he said.
He further expressed concern over the country’s socio-economic conditions, including insecurity, poverty, and displacement, stressing the need for compassionate and people-oriented leadership.
Despite his resignation, Obi reaffirmed his belief in Nigeria’s potential to achieve progress through competent leadership anchored on justice, compassion, and equal opportunity.
He also lamented what he described as a toxic political environment marked by intimidation, insecurity, and persistent scrutiny, which he said has made meaningful service increasingly difficult.
Obi concluded by noting that, regardless of prevailing challenges, he remains committed to advocating for a better Nigeria.
