ABUJA (Ministry of Health News) – The Minister of Health, C.O.Onyebuchi Chukwu in the wake of the current security challenges in the country and the existence of emotional and psychological trauma to its victims has constituted a Ministerial Committee for the emotional and psychological management of victims of all recent hazards, bombings and kidnappings, particularly those likely to occur to the young girls abducted from the Chibok secondary school.
According to the report from the Public Relations Department of the Ministry recently, the Committee which made up of Psychiatrists, Clinical Psychologists from forty Federal Tertiary Health Institutions, traditional leaders, faith-based organisations, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) as well as the Federal Ministries of Education, Women Affairs, Youth and Sports and Non-Governmental Organisations working in the health sector.
The statement stated added that the meeting determined the plethora of psychological disorders occasioned by the current challenges to include among others: post-traumatic disorders, depressive disorders, behavioural changes in children and obsessive compulsive disorders.
“The assignment of the Committee among others includes – the training of healthcare workers in psychological first aid; basic grief counselling and how to recognise symptoms of psychological instability. The Committee is to work with States and Local Governments while collaborating with non-governmental organisations already working in the affected states. The Standard Operating Guidelines and Intervention Strategies are being developed for the management of these cases,” the report hinted.
