Lagos-Calabar highway: Umahi seeks Sanwo-Olu’s support for service lanes, drainage

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has appealed to Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to support the Federal Government in providing service lanes and additional drainage infrastructure along the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway.

Umahi made the appeal during a stakeholders’ engagement on the coastal highway and other federal road projects in Lagos.

The minister said the proposed service lanes and drainage channels were necessary to address flooding and improve accessibility along the highway corridor.

He called for financial and technical collaboration between the Federal and Lagos State governments, stressing that both levels of government must work together to address infrastructure challenges affecting residents.

Umahi said the Federal Government was preparing to commence work on the service lanes, particularly along the first two sections of the coastal highway.

He disclosed that the first lot of the highway had been completed, while work on the second lot had reached more than 80 per cent completion.

The minister also said construction had progressed in parts of the coastal corridor, including sections covering Calabar, Akwa Ibom, Ogun and Ondo states.

He urged Lagos residents and other stakeholders to support the project and protect completed infrastructure from vandalism and illegal activities.

Umahi maintained that the coastal highway remains a major infrastructure project capable of improving transportation, trade and economic activities along Nigeria’s coastline.

He assured Nigerians that the Federal Government remained committed to completing the project and called for continued cooperation among all stakeholders.
