The Permanent Secretary in the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity, Clement Illoh has called on trade unions and management to embrace the paradigm shift approach of the Ministry which advocates move from adversarial and confrontational industrial relations approach to a more developmental approach to issues through social dialogue and collective bargaining.
The statement was contained in the monthly performance report for May 2015 published by the Press and Public Relations Department of the Ministry on Tuesday June 2, 2015.
The statement which revealed that Clement Illoh gave the charge recently in Abuja while declaring open a two-day workshop on “Combating the challenges of Industrial Relations Practices and Trade Union Administration in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency,” indicated that the workshop aimed at finding lasting solutions to the problem of industrial unrest in the aviation sector. It added that the day was a great one, set aside for continuous search for peace and harmony in the aviation sector.
According to the report, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry represented by the Director of Planning, Research & Statistics, Ibrahim Idris (Dr) during his remarks at the occasion disclosed that the workshop was necessitated by the need to enhance the knowledge of both the management staff and the labour unions operating in the aviation sector, especially in the management of trade disputes and industrial relations among stakeholders in the aviation sector.
“The workshop will provide a major platform for understanding the rule of the game by the trade unions and management, thereby ensuring harmonious co-existence of the social partners and entrenchment of sound industrial relations systems conducive for sustainable development and growth of the aviation sector,” the PermSec said.
While speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA), Abdulsalami Ibrahim (Engr) affirmed that in view of the critical and strategic role of the aviation sector in national development, the need to foster a closer social partnership and working relationship between the agency and labour unions for effective air navigation service cannot be over emphasized. He implored all participants to concentrate and interact with resource persons for optimal benefit from the workshop.
The report further stated that participants in the workshop were drawn from the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency, the Ministry of Aviation and the Federal Ministry of Labour and Productivity as well as the operating unions and professional associations in the Nigerian Airspace Management Agency (NAMA).
In another development, the Ministry witnessed the appointment of Kashim Yunusa Akor by the former President of Nigeria, Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the new Director-General/Chief Executive of the National Productivity Centre (NPC) during the period under review.
The appointment which was contained in a letter signed by the former Minister of Labour and Productivity, Joel Danlami Ikenya (Senator) and inscribed in a correspondence from President Goodluck Jonathan with Reference No. PRES/94/ML/103 was dated May 18, 2015. It noted that the appointment took effect from May 19, 2015 for the tenure of four years.
The Publicity Department reported that the appointment followed the completion of the second and final tenure of the erstwhile Director – General, Paul M Bdliya (Dr). Adding, Kashim Yunusa Akor holds a Masters Degree in Public Administration and Certificate in Productivity Management from the Spring Institute, Singapore among other professional certificates and has been a Director in the centre with over twenty years experience in productivity practice.
