Former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, has described plans by the Acting Governor of the state to probe his administration as “ridiculous”.
The acting governor, Alhaji Ahmadu Fintiri, in a state-wide broadcast on Tuesday, announced that Nyako’s administration, which he accused of leaving behind a whopping N82 billion debt, would be probed.
A statement issued in Yola on Wednesday by Nyako’s Director of Press and Publicity, Malam Ahmad Sajoh, said the planned probe was an attempt to discredit the former governor and pitch him against the people of Adamawa.
“To say Nyako left a liability of N82 billion is to say the least, ridiculous.
“How much did the state get as income over the period? It is not even half of the amount quoted”, Sajoh said in the statement.
The statement reads in part: “We have received the news of a plan to probe Murtala Nyako as one of the expected outcomes of the illegal process that culminated in his forceful removal from office by the combined forces of opposition in Abuja and Yola. The framers of the 1999 constitution did not foresee that the provisions of the document will be abused in the manner of a coup d’ tat as was done in the illegal impeachment of Governor Nyako. And like coupists, the perpetrators of the act have adopted the same modalities of reeling out false and bogus figures, forceful removal of bonafide office holders and intimidating those who refuse to succumb to their strong arm tactics”.
It added that any inquiry by the interim administration will only form part of “the ill-conceived plot to justify the removal of Nyako by the House of Assembly which was done in contravention of the law and subsisting court orders”.
Sajoh reiterated the resolve by Nyako to challenge his impeachment in court.
“Those behind the action should take lessons from the case of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and Governor Fayose of Ekiti State, who were framed and later rose to greater heights”, he said.
The statement maintained that the probe would not be fair even as it added that Nyako was already in court and was hopeful that the judiciary would vindicate him.
