The African Democratic Congress Presidential Campaign Council, ADC-PCC, has accused the All Progressives Congress-led administration of worsening the welfare and working conditions of Nigerian teachers.
The council made the allegation in a statement issued to mark the 2026 World Teachers’ Day, observed on October 5, saying teachers were facing poor remuneration, inadequate welfare, rising living costs and difficult working conditions.

The statement, signed by the ADC-PCC Director of Media and Publicity, Kola Ologbondiyan, described teachers as critical to national development and said their contribution to educating future generations should be matched with improved welfare.
Ologbondiyan blamed the situation on several factors, including the removal of the petroleum subsidy without sufficient cushioning measures, poor and irregular salaries, inadequate welfare provisions, insufficient training and deteriorating school infrastructure.
He also alleged that high transportation costs, inadequate medical insurance and rising housing expenses were making it increasingly difficult for teachers to meet their basic needs.
According to him, the challenges have affected the teaching profession, with poor remuneration in primary and secondary schools and recurring industrial disputes in the tertiary education sector over welfare and working conditions.
Despite the challenges, the ADC-PCC said teachers had continued to perform their duties and deserved better professional recognition and improved conditions of service.
The council said an ADC administration would prioritise teachers’ welfare through improved wages and allowances, health insurance, affordable housing, professional development and better facilities for teaching and learning.
It added that improving the welfare of teachers was necessary to strengthen Nigeria’s education system and ensure better outcomes for students across the country.
