The pan-Yoruba socio-cultural and political organisation, Afenifere, has raised concerns over the ongoing security crisis in Nigeria, particularly the increasing incidents of kidnapping for ransom.
The organisation has alleged that insiders may be involved in these criminal activities, calling for urgent action to address the situation.
In a statement issued by the organisation’s National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Jare Ajayi, Afenifere urged President Ahmed Bola Tinubu to convene a community/stakeholders meeting to tackle the rising insecurity.
The statement highlighted that the nature of the security challenges suggests the involvement of insiders, who may have connections with the victims or knowledge of their movements.
Afenifere pointed out that these insiders could be individuals with social, business, or family ties to the victims.
Additionally, the organisation cited security experts who have suggested the possible involvement of unscrupulous security personnel in these criminal activities.
The statement referenced a letter from Major General Ali-Keffi, a former General Officer Commanding, 1 Mechanized Division, Kaduna of the Nigerian Army, to President Bola Tinubu, which reportedly raised concerns about the role of insiders in the security crisis.
Afenifere further highlighted recent kidnapping incidents in Otu, Saki, and Okaka in Oke-ogun area of Oyo State, as well as ongoing abductions in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and attacks on communities in Niger State.
The organisation emphasized that these incidents indicate the possible involvement of insiders as conspirators or collaborators in these criminal acts.
The organisation called for a comprehensive approach to addressing the security challenges, including thorough investigations to uncover the perpetrators and their collaborators.
Afenifere stressed the need for urgent action to restore security and peace in the country, urging President Tinubu to take proactive steps in this regard.
