A comprehensive new report has highlighted the transformative role of artificial intelligence (AI) in advancing healthcare across Africa. The study, titled Governance of Artificial Intelligence for Global Health in Africa, was released by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation) in collaboration with various African institutions and research councils. It underscores the potential of AI and data science to revolutionize health systems on the continent.
The report is the culmination of a year-long effort involving consultations across 43 African countries and insights from over 300 stakeholders. It provides a comprehensive examination of national-level perspectives on AI and data science for global health, identifying policy gaps and opportunities for ethical and impactful applications of these technologies.
Key findings from the report indicate that AI is already playing a significant role in various aspects of healthcare in Africa. These include enhancing clinical decision-making, improving patient care, increasing access to quality healthcare services, and optimizing the management of medical resources. AI technologies are being leveraged to support medical practitioners in diagnostics, treatment planning, and administrative tasks, thereby improving efficiency and outcomes in healthcare delivery.
Despite the promising advancements, the report also highlights challenges in harnessing AI-based technologies, such as high costs associated with computing infrastructure, limited access to quality data, and the need for skilled personnel. Addressing these challenges requires concerted efforts from governments, private sector stakeholders, and international partners to invest in infrastructure, capacity building, and policy development that support the sustainable integration of AI into healthcare systems.
The SFA Foundation emphasizes the importance of developing AI governance frameworks that reflect Africa’s unique context and priorities.
