In a recent announcement made by Richard Olatunde, Chief Press Secretary to Ondo State Governor Rotimi Akeredolu, it has been revealed that the governor is set to embark on another medical leave starting December 13, 2023. This development comes as part of the ongoing medical treatment that has kept Governor Akeredolu away from Ondo State since June 2023.
Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa is slated to assume the role of acting governor in Akeredolu’s absence, a move that follows recent tensions between the governor’s loyalists and the deputy. The discord arose due to Governor Akeredolu’s prolonged absence and the ensuing power vacuum it created.
The governor’s aides have clarified that despite being away from the state, Akeredolu has been actively engaged in running the affairs of Ondo State from Ibadan, Oyo State, where he has been undergoing further medical treatments. The situation has raised concerns among various stakeholders, prompting President Bola Tinubu to intervene in the emerging political crisis.

Olatunde emphasized in the press statement that Governor Akeredolu’s decision to commence the medical leave is driven by the need to prioritize his health and ensure a complete recovery before resuming his official duties. The statement also mentioned that a formal letter notifying the House of Assembly about the medical leave, along with a notice formally transferring power, will be sent in accordance with the Nigerian Constitution.
The absence of Governor Akeredolu from Ondo State has been a matter of public concern, especially given the prolonged nature of his medical leave. After returning to Nigeria in early September following a three-month medical leave in Germany, the governor has been conducting official business from Ibadan, the capital of Oyo State.
This situation has not only led to a palpable vacuum in the governance of Ondo State but has also triggered political tensions and disputes within the ruling party. President Bola Tinubu’s involvement underscores the gravity of the situation, as efforts are made to navigate the political landscape in the governor’s absence.
As Governor Akeredolu takes this medical leave, the eyes of Ondo State residents and political observers will be keenly focused on the developments that unfold during this period. The acting governor, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, will shoulder the responsibility of steering the ship of the state in Akeredolu’s stead, with expectations high for effective leadership and governance during this crucial period.
