The National Secretary of Alliance for Democracy (AD), Mr Rafiu Salau, has urged politicians to always consider the ideology and manifesto of any political party before joining it.
.
Salau made the call in Abuja on Tuesday in an interview in Abuja.
.
He said that defection was a normal trend, but politicians should allow ideologies to be their guiding principle when considering to defect.
.
“Defection is normal in a democratic setting, especially a multi-party state like ours, but party ideology should be considered by politicians in deciding to leave or stay in a political party,” he said.
.
He said his party was preparing for the forthcoming governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun and was optimistic of winning the elections.
.
According to Salau, all aspirants of AD are qualified to win the governorship election in the two states.
.
“Anyone that emerges as the candidate will be supported by others in the interest of the party.”
.
Salau called for the restoration of government’s funding of political parties.
.
According to him, political parties are like government institutions which also served the people.
.
“Since ministries are not funded by the directors and ministers but the government, political parties should also be funded by the government.
.
“Funding of political parties by its leaders make them see the parties as their properties.
.
“Government funding of political parties will serve the people better than they do presently,’’ he said.
.
The scribe said the political parties would, through the Inter-Party Advisory Council, initiate a bill to the National Assembly to get legislative backing on funding of political parties.
