SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(Marketwired – May 31, 2015) – Automotive Grade Linux (AGL), a collaborative open source project developing a common, Linux-based software stack for the connected car, today announced that Alps Electric, Konsulko Group, Sony and Virtual Open Systems are joining the Linux Foundation and AGL to widen the door for open source innovation and build the cars of the future.

“We are delighted to see members join that represent a range of companies that build, integrate and develop all aspects of the car — from electronics to suppliers to services companies,” said Dan Cauchy, general manager of automotive, Linux Foundation. “We are excited to see the momentum building around open source automotive and look forward to their participation.”

AGL is a community of developers working across company lines to develop a common and open automotive platform for OEMs and suppliers to utilize and customize for their needs. It builds on top of a unified Linux code base and adds key applications developed in HTML5 and JavaScript into a single open source reference platform. AGL code, Design Requirements Documents and more are all available on the AGL wiki to give anyone the background and tools needed to use the software and start contributing to the project.

    About the newest members:

Alps Electric is a leading global manufacturer of high quality electronic components for mobile devices, home electronics, vehicles and industrial equipment. Alps Electric has also taken a focus on the connected car, by introducing the Wireless LAN/Bluetooth® Combination Module for Automotive products that are vehicle compatible. This series of products is ideal for wireless connection between automotive equipment, such as car navigation systems, and mobile devices. Alps Electric supplies over 40,000 different components to about 2,000 companies all over the world.

“The Internet of Things is driving innovation throughout the car and we see open source as a key enabler,” said Yoshiharu Sato, Manager of Software Department, Alps Electric. “Having a common, open reference platform for the auto industry will accelerate our ability to create and innovate.”

Konsulko Group provides technology consulting and software development services to companies looking to harness the power of open source software in automotive, networking, consumer electronics and more. With a solid commitment to open source methodologies, Konsulko Group serves a full range of client companies, from large OEMs to startups and incubators — in Europe, Asia and the Silicon Valley.

“Open source has become the fabric of computing and is driving innovation across all industries,” said Pete Popov, co-founder and CEO, Konsulko Group. “We’re committed to helping OEMs find the best strategy for adopting and integrating open source solutions into their platforms and believe AGL is at the forefront of this effort.”

Virtual Open Systems is a French high-tech startup company active in the field of embedded software development. The core business focus is on open source virtualization solutions and custom services for complex mixed criticality automotive, NFV networking infrastructures, consumer electronics, mobile devices and in general, for embedded heterogeneous multicore systems around new generation processor architectures (i.e. ARMv8, etc.).

“We believe that mixed criticality enabled virtualization open source solutions accelerate innovation and the convergence of multiple systems into a novel heterogeneous multicore single platform,” said Daniel Raho, President, Virtual Open Systems. “Through our partnership with AGL, we aim to drive the automotive In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI) beyond the current state of the art.”

Dan Cauchy, general manager of Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) is delivering a keynote presentation at the Automotive Linux Summit on June 1-2 in Tokyo, Japan to discuss the state of AGL.
