Alvaro Morata has completed a move to Atletico Madrid from Chelsea on an initial loan deal until the end of the 2019/20 season.
Former Real Madrid and Juventus forward Morata, 26, is returning to the Spanish capital after an 18-month spell in London, and completed a medical on Sunday morning.
His words, “I feel a lot of excitement,” Morata said on the Atletico website. “I am very happy and proud to be here. I can’t want to start training and playing with my new teammates.”
Under La Liga’s strict budget rules Atletico have had to free up space on their wage-bill to allow for Morata’s arrival, with winger Gelson Martins having been loaned to Ligue 1 side Monaco
Nikola Kalinic could also leave before Thursday’s transfer deadline, while Wolves may make their loan deal for full-back Jonny Castro into a permanent transfer.
Some fans at the Atletico’s 2-0 La Liga win at home to Getafe on Saturday chanted ‘Less Moratas and more Borja Garces,’ suggesting they would prefer to see their own home grown talent in the team rather than spend big money on a former Real Madrid player. However others inside the Wanda Metropolitano whistled in response.
