The Anambra State government has launched an investigation into the recent arrest of Franklin Okechukwu Nwadialo, the newly elected chairman of Ogbaru Local Government Area, who was apprehended by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in Texas for alleged involvement in a $3.3 million romance scam.
Nwadialo, 40, was detained following accusations that he masterminded an elaborate online fraud scheme targeting vulnerable women across the United States. According to an indictment from the U.S.
Department of Justice, Nwadialo allegedly used fake identities on dating platforms, including Match, Zoosk, and Christian Café, to lure victims into transferring large sums of money.
The scam, reportedly spanning several years, involved fabricated crises, such as military fines and family emergencies, which were used to manipulate victims into sending money to accounts under Nwadialo’s control.
Anambra State’s Commissioner for Local Government, Community, and Chieftaincy Affairs, Tonycollins Nwabunwanne, commented on the matter, stating that the government is working to gather all available information on the case.
“We first heard about the situation online, and we are currently investigating to understand the full details before making any decisions.
Our priority is to ensure that justice is served and to preserve the integrity of our state,” Nwabunwanne said.
Nwadialo’s arrest has caused shock across Anambra, where his recent election had sparked hope for progressive leadership in Ogbaru LGA.
Community members and local officials have expressed disappointment over the allegations, raising concerns about the area’s reputation.
In line with constitutional procedures, it is anticipated that Nwadialo’s deputy will temporarily assume his responsibilities as the investigation continues.
An anonymous senior member of the Anambra State House of Assembly confirmed that this transition would take place pending further developments.
The state government has emphasized its commitment to addressing allegations of corruption and criminal activity, regardless of political status, and assured the public of its cooperation with U.S. authorities to ensure a transparent process.
