The Plateau State chapter of the All Progressives Congress, APC, has explained why Governor Caleb Mutfwang has not been welcomed into the party amid mounting speculation about a possible defection.
In recent days, political groups across the state have staged rallies and press conferences, either endorsing or rejecting the governor’s rumoured move to the APC. Prominent party figures, including APC National Chairman Prof. Nentawe Yilwatda, have openly opposed the idea.

Governor Mutfwang has repeatedly denied defecting, insisting instead that APC members have been trying to woo him.
Speaking on the issue, APC State Chairman Rufus Bature said the governor must follow due process if he truly intends to join the party.
“The governor should follow the proper channel. Let him consult with the leaders of the party first. We have leaders at the national level; he should meet with them,” Bature said.
According to him, defection into the APC requires structured dialogue and mutual agreement.
“There must be negotiations, give-and-take, for us to accept him. Let him come in a proper way. That is all we are saying,” he added.
Bature stressed that the party needs clarity on the governor’s intentions before any decision can be made.
“Politics is about dialogue and negotiations. If the terms and conditions are good for the party, they will accept him. But if we don’t know his intentions for coming into the party, that is where the issue arises,” he explained.
He said the lack of formal communication from Mutfwang is responsible for the mixed reactions coming from different political groups in the state.
As of the time of filing this report, the governor has not formally informed the APC National Chairman of any plan to defect.
