The chieftains of the All Progressives Congress (APC) have started holding meetings and consultations in a bid to rescue the embattled Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Al-Makura from being impeached.
The APC is also reaching out to elements within the ruling Peoples Democratic Party to forestall a repeat of the party’s governorship seat loss in Adamawa.
Apart from the legal option, the party has enlisted the assistance of its members known to have close links with the Presidency and prominent leaders of the PDP in Nasarawa State to get their support against the impeachment, a top member of the APC told Thisday, Friday.
The news platform also cited sources as saying, the governor’s decision to visit President Goodluck Jonathan at the Aso Villa yesterday night was part of the steps being taken to avert his impeachment.
Al-Makura and Jonathan had last week met when the president was in Doma, Nasarawa to commission a privately-held rice farm and Al-Makura would have started preliminary talks to find favour, but the impeachment process had not heated up then.
Majority of the legislators in the Nasarawa State House of Assembly have voted to commence the impeachment of the governor, accusing him of engaging in extra- budgetary spending.
However, based on the perception that the governor was being persecuted wrongfully, the APC is planning to embark on an aggressive media drive to explain issues to members of the public with the aim of attracting sympathy for the governor, including provoking a public debate over the abuse of the impeachment process.
Meanwhile, Police have began clampdown on pro-APC campaigners, as 22 were arrested during the week for protesting against the impeachment of Governor Al-Makura.
