The All Progressives Congress (APC) has sounded the alarm over an alleged plan by the Kano State Government to utilize N8 billion from local government councils’ funds without clear justification.
Abdullahi Abbas, the state’s APC chairman, made this revelation in a statement issued on Tuesday in Abuja.
Abbas called upon the local government councils and commercial banks in the state to halt the process of clearing the release of funds to the state government.
He cited the ongoing political uncertainty in the state, attributed to the pending Supreme Court judgment on the governorship election, as a reason for concern.
Expressing his apprehension, Abbas accused the NNPP government of attempting to take control of the local government councils to misappropriate their funds, which reportedly amount to over N8 billion.
He disclosed that the APC had obtained a copy of the approval letter from the Ministry for Local Government, instructing the 44 local government councils to release N101 million each for the construction of Dan’Agundi interchange and N36 million each for the construction of Tal’udu interchange.
The approval letter, addressed to all council chairmen and copied to the Auditor-General, Local Government Audit, and all zonal inspectors of the ministry, outlined the councils’ contributions to the aforementioned projects.
Highlighting further developments, Abbas stated that the NNPP government had recently replaced Directors of Personnel Management (DPMs) and treasurers in a move seemingly aimed at ensuring smooth execution of their alleged plan to utilize the funds.
In a plea to the NNPP’s government, Abbas urged them to prioritize the interests of the people of the state, asserting that the decision to embark on such projects had faced criticism even from within the NNPP’s own ranks.
