A member of the Seventh House of Representatives, Mr. Bamidele Faparusi, has said the All Progressives Congress leadership was right to dictate to its members on who it wants to become principal officers of the National Assembly.
Faparusi, who represented Emure/Gbonyin/Ekiti East Federal constituency, said it was the prerogative of a party to guide its elected members and ensure execution of programmes that would be in tune with its mission and vision.
Speaking in defence of the APC leadership in Ado Ekiti on Tuesday, the former lawmaker also said the party must be repositioned in Ekiti State to be able to win elections.
He said, “I have heard people ignorantly arguing that APC has no reason to interfere in who becomes what in the National Assembly. This argument is wrong. The APC has the responsibility to guide its members to protect its interests.
“Before you stood for elections, you would sign a pact with the party that you will abide by its directive at all times. So, APC did no wrong by ensuring that those who shared President Muhammadu Buhari’s dream are elected as Senate President and the Speaker, as the case may be.
“APC has not breached any law by interfering, because lobbying is part of legislative norms and convention. The party can lobby for a certain candidate to occupy a certain position for certain reasons”, he stated.
The former Rep member, who is a strong member of the Ekiti APC Restoration Group, said he and other like-minds were working hard to unify the party and bring all splinter groups in Ekiti together to defeat the Peoples Democratic Party come 2018.
“As leaders and beneficiaries of the party, we must reposition the APC. We are meeting with former Governors, former Senators, Reps and others, on the need to brainstorm on the future of our party.
“Though, I have seen some people declaring ambitions to contest, but I believe that we must first come together as a strong family before doing that. We are taking steps and by the grace of God, we will approach the next election with more vigour and strength to be able to recapture Ekiti”, he said.
