Ifeanyi Ubah, senator for Nigeria’s Anambra South Senatorial District who was elected on the platform of the Young Progressives Party, YPP, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC party on Thursday, bringing the total number of APC senators to 60.
After Ubah switched allegiances to the APC in the Red Chamber, there were 50 legislators representing minority parties.
Ubah cited irreconcilable differences with the YPP leadership in his letter of defection, which was read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio before the day’s plenary was suspended to honor Jelani Danbuga, a representative from Sokoto State who passed away on Wednesday.
To him, the commitment to good governance, economic development, and social advancement shown by the ruling party was decisive in selecting APC as his new political platform.
Here is an excerpt from the letter: “I am willing to formally alert and advise the Distinguished Senate President and our colleagues of inconsiderable disagreements between me and the leadership of my party (YPP).
Therefore, I have made up my mind to go from the Young Progressives Party (YPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), the largest and most influential political organization in Africa.
This is an urgent matter for me to address as a committed politician and as a representative of my people.
The All Progressives Congress is better suited to champion the ideals and principles that can move Nigeria forward, and after careful consideration of the political landscape in Nigeria and, in particular, the good works being done by the All Progressives Congress since the emergence of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as president of Nigeria, I have come to that realization and conclusion.
“The APC’s dedication to good governance, economic development, and social progress deeply resonates with my own conviction, and the alignment of each member on key national issues for achieving the promises of any decent politician, including the promises that I made to my constituents to improve the lot of all of them.
To better involve my senatorial district in the admirable objective of my President, I have decided to join the Renewed Hope Initiative, which was started by Bola Tinubu.
