Hosts APR struggled to beat Telekom FC of Djibouti 1-0 to register their second win at the ongoing CECAFA-Kagame Cup on Wednesday at the Kigali Regional Stadium.
Defender Emery Bayisenge scored a stunning free kick in the 36th minute to ensure APR go top of Group B with six points in two matches. The win followed another 1-0 slim victory over Burundi’s Atletico secured in their opening game.
The military side took control of the game and Jean Claude Iranzi nearly secured the opening goal but his strike was well cleared by impressive Telecom defender Hussein Butoyi who was named man of the match for a second time running.
Michel Ndahinduka then fluffed a long range shot outside the goal area which went wide in the 30th minute as Telecom struggled to hold the military side which was only good in defence and midfield.
KCCA survives on penalty
KCCA of Uganda also registered a narrow 1-0 win over Burundi’s Atletico in the other Group B clash of the day. Brian Umony scored the lone goal on 22 minutes following a foul by skipper Francis Nongwe inside the 16-yard area.
Telecom and Atletico occupy the remaining spots with three points each whilst Gor Mahia sits at the tip of the log point-less.
APR face Gor Mahia on Friday before winding up the group stage action against KCCA on Sunday in a game that may decide who wins top spot of Group B.
The tournament continues on Thursday with a triple header set to be played at Kigali Regional stadium. Ethiopia’s Adama City face Atlabara of South Sudan, Police of Rwanda versus Benadir of Somalia whilst Rayon Sports of Rwanda winds up the day’s action with a tricky test against KMKM.
