Argentina has announced its intention to withdraw from the World Health Organization (WHO), following in the footsteps of U.S. President Donald Trump, who initiated the United States’ exit from the global health body last month.
President Javier Milei, a self-described libertarian and close ally of Trump, reportedly ordered Argentina’s withdrawal due to deep disagreements over the WHO’s management of health issues.
Reasons for the Withdrawal

Presidential spokesperson Manuel Adorni cited several concerns, including the WHO’s handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, which led to months of lockdowns under Argentina’s previous leftist government.
He also pointed to what he described as a lack of independence from political influences exerted by other states.
Trump, who formally moved to withdraw the U.S. from the WHO on January 20, had similarly criticized the organization for its response to the COVID-19 pandemic and other global health crises.
He also argued that the U.S. was burdened with unfairly high financial contributions to the agency.
With Argentina now following suit, the decision is expected to spark international debate over the role and effectiveness of the WHO in global health governance.
