Ariana Grande’s honors just keep on coming.
Days after her new single, “Thank u, next,” broke Spotify single-day play records for a female artist, the song has earned another bit of recognition: It’s the No. 1 song on the Billboard Hot 100. So basically, it’s the most popular song in the country this week.
“Thank u, next” actually marks her first No. 1 debut, which is surprising considering she’s the hitmaker who brought us songs like “Dangerous Woman,” “Problem,” and “Break Free.” The last time a woman debuted at No. 1 on this Billboard chart was back in 2015, when Adele’s “Hello” smashed onto the radio, according to BuzzFeed.
As fans pointed out on Twitter, Ariana joins a relatively exclusive group of women with No. 1 single debuts. Since 2010, only six other women have achieved the milestone: Britney Spears (“Hold It Against Me”), Kesha (“We R Who We R”), Lady Gaga (“Born This Way”), Katy Perry (“Part of Me”), Taylor Swift (“Shake It Off”), and Adele (“Hello”).
That’s compared with nine men who have achieved the milestone this decade, including Eminem, Baauer, Justin Bieber, Zayn, Justin Timberlake, Ed Sheeran, DJ Khaled (featuring Justin Bieber, Quavo, Chance the Rapper & Lil Wayne), Drake, and Childish Gambino.
Ariana herself weighed in on the exciting news, tweeting, “Yeeeeeee baby’s first number one.” She also retweeted a fan who wrote, “Phew jus remembered ariana has a whole ass album on the way too with absolutely no features, jus ariana, herself and aubrey. ya, this is IT!” Too correct.
