    Assistance by the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security to the Project in Chad

    TOKYO, Japan, November 28, 2013/African Press Organization (APO)/ — 1. On October 14, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security, which was established by the initiative of the Government of Japan, decided to extend assistance totaling 3,082,750 US dollars (approximately 253 million yen) to a project entitled “Empowering and Rebuilding Communities with Multi-Sectoral Initiatives in Post-Conflict Chad for a Sustainable Change”.

    2. The project is implemented by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF), and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). This project aims at contributing to human security of the conflict–affected populations through improving various types of security, such as water, food, health, human rights and well-being. The activities will include the following:

    Increasing access to sustainable livelihoods–clean water, health and education, and provide opportunities for social integration of local communities with a top-down and a bottom up approaches.

    Reducing the poverty level and ensuring employment through supports for basic needs, job-trainings and education, and increasing local ownership and empowerment of the community.

    Protecting human rights of the most vulnerable persons through increased local ownership and empowerment with reinforcing rule of law, social support, and capacity development.

    3. This project is expected to promote human security of the vulnerable population such as the displaced persons and host communities in Chad.
