Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, the former Vice-President of Nigeria during Chief Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime, has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 general elections.

Atiku emerged the winner during the PDP presidential primary conducted yesterday, Saturday, the 28th of May, 2022, where 12 aspirants jostled for the seat to become the party’s presidential flag bearer for the 2023 general elections.
The race was not easy as the 12 aspirants jostle for the 767 delegate votes across the 36 states of Nigeria.
Atiku polled 371 votes to become the party’s flag bearer. The Governor of Rivers State, Nyesom Wike, came second in line with 237 votes. Former Governor of Kwara State and former Senate President Dr Bukola Saraki polled 70 votes, while Udom Gabriel Emmanuel, the current Governor of Akwa Ibom State, got 38 votes.
The Governor of Bauchi State, Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, scored 20 votes, followed by the President of the Nigerian senate and Secretary to the Government of the Federation during Goodluck Jonathan’s presidency, Anyim Pius Anyim, raked 14 votes. The only woman in the race, Olivia Tariela and Sam Ohabunwa (Mazi Samuel Iheanyichukwu Ohuabunwa, OFR), got one vote each.

Twelve votes voided. Governor Aminu Waziri Tambuwal of Sokoto State early on withdraw from the race while pledging his support for Atiku Abubakar. Other candidates in the race are former Ekiti State Governor Ayodele Peter Fayose, Aare Dele Momodu etc. did not get any vote.
